Statement from the Australian Polo Federation, NSW Polo Association, and Victorian Polo Association Regarding Transport Accident on the Hume Highway

24 Oct 2025

The Australian Polo Federation (APF), NSW Polo Association (NSWPA), and Victorian Polo Association (VPA) are deeply saddened to confirm that an accident occurred yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 23 October 2025) on the Hume Highway near Sutton Forest, involving a specialised horse-transporting semi-trailer carrying polo horses.

The driver, Mr Anthony O’Leary, a 27-year-old professional polo player and former Australian polocrosse representative, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains under medical care. Mr O’Leary is a highly experienced and licensed livestock transporter with an exemplary safety record.

Despite the best efforts of attending veterinarians, one horse could not be saved at the scene and another was humanely euthanised under veterinary advice. Seven other horses were safely removed for treatment and are receiving ongoing care and monitoring.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle took evasive action to avoid a vehicle entering the highway, resulting in the crash. The APF, NSWPA, and VPA urge all media outlets to avoid speculation while official investigations by NSW Police and the Crash Investigation Unit continue.

The organisations extend their sincere gratitude to NSW Police, NSW SES, NSW Ambulance, and the attending veterinarians for their prompt and professional response.

The welfare of horses and the safety of those who care for them remain paramount to the polo community. The APF, NSWPA, and VPA are providing full support to Mr O’Leary, his family, and all affected.

Further updates will be provided when verified information becomes available.

Kind regards,

Amber Drum
