 Richard Walker (1941–2023) was one of the most formidable and influential figures in Australian polo, remembered for his fierce competitiveness, leadership, and longstanding contribution to the sport. He earned 17 Test caps for Australia, captaining the national team three times, making him the second mostcapped Australian player in history.

Walker’s career was defined by major tournament success. He won the Countess of Dudley Cup nine times, one of the most prestigious achievements in Australian polo, and secured the Australasian Gold Cup seven times. In the 1970s he became a dominant force in the fast, highpressure threeaside night polo matches at the old Sydney Royal Showgrounds, where crowds of 20,000 watched fiercely contested games.

He was also a member of the celebrated Australian Emus team that toured New Zealand in 1972, playing alongside other greats of the era. Known for his determination, strength of character, and uncompromising will to win, Walker earned deep respect from teammates and rivals alike. Prominent players such as Sinclair Hill described him as one of the greatest players in Australian polo history.

In 2022, Walker was inducted into the Australian Polo Hall of Fame, recognising his immense impact on the sport. He passed away in 2023, leaving a legacy of excellence, leadership, and passion that continues to shape Australian polo
