Guards Polo Club appoints Glen Gilmore as Polo Manager

14 Nov 2012

Australian team captain fights off strong competition to land coveted job at Smith’s Lawn

Guards Polo Club is delighted to announce that Glen Gilmore will be the Club’s new Polo Manager. The captain of the Australian polo team, who played off an eight-goal handicap at the height of his career, will take up his position at the start of the 2013 season.

On confirming the appointment, Glen said: “I am delighted to take up this coveted role at Guards Polo Club, especially as some of my most memorable games have been played on the high-goal grounds at Smith’s Lawn. This is, without doubt, the number one job in polo management anywhere in the world and so the opportunity to work closely with the great team at Guards, creating some of the world’s best known polo tournaments, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Neil Hobday, Chief Executive of Guards Polo Club and Chairman of the Selection Panel praised Glen and thanked the Panel for its excellent work. “Glen Gilmore is definitely the right man for this tough job. He brings much experience of the game at the highest level combined with a deep understanding of the ways of Guards Polo Club, thanks to his earlier work as our Chief Umpire. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Panel members for their integrity and commitment during this thorough interview process, especially considering the impressively heavyweight long list of suitable candidates.”

Glen Gilmore will take up his position at Guards Polo Club on 1 April 2013, working alongside Assistant Polo Manager Emma Leiva and Polo Secretary Tara Smith. However Glen is already a familiar face to many at Guards Polo Club, having been the Club’s Chief Umpire, a member of the Board, where he represented the high-goal professional players, and an occasional and witty commentator. He has also been a member of many winning teams at Smith’s Lawn too, including receiving the Coronation Cup from HRH Prince Charles when captaining Australia to victory on Cartier International Day 2005.

Glen succeeds Oliver Ellis, who resigned from Guards Polo Club earlier this year after some 10 years in the role. Previous polo managers at Guards Polo Club have included Lord Patrick Beresford, Major General Claude Pert, Major Ronald Ferguson, Roddy Wood and Derek Reid.

The Club hosts more than 450 matches throughout the season, and tournaments include several prestigious competitions, including the high-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup, Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup, Jack Wills Varsity Day, Pommery Archie David Cup, Ganjam Jaipur Trophy Day, Laureus Polo Day and Audi Polo Day for the Coronation Cup. This year it took over the management of the polo at neighbouring Coworth Park, adding two further grounds and several well known tournaments to its fixture list.
