Dear members of the Australian polo community,
It is with sad regret that I announce the passing of Ken Field. Ken, aged 85, passed away in the early hours of Monday morning in the Narromine Hospital. In his later years, suffered from the onset of Alzheimer's.
Ken moved to Narromine from Carinda where he managed a station in the Macquarie Marshes and was approached by the late Tom Cahill who told Ken he had a couple of good horses in the paddock. Ken with background of stock horses was asked if he would like to try polo, he gave it a go and was hooked.
When the Narromine Polo Club closed Ken joined the Wellington Polo Club. His greatest moment came when winning the Wellington Shield with his three sons Colin, Gerry and Mark. Ken being a well known horseman and fearless rider bred many top horses. His son Mark, who played 22 tests for Australia, was always mounted on horses bred by Ken. Those who had the privilege to be near Ken on the sideline were in for a real experience they would never forget - the old bushy would never be backward in his comments regarding some of the umpires decisions.
Ken was a man who loved the bush and loved his horses. He was a true character of polo and he will be sorely missed.
